Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ( Ptsd ) - 1364 Words

Currently, about eight percent of the world’s population will develop some form of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. These numbers maximize when focusing on the military alone. During the Vietnam War, about fifteen percent of veterans were diagnosed with PTSD. This number doubled as the veterans went on with their life continued after the war to thirty percent. Our two most recent wars, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, lead in the numbers with up to twenty percent of the veterans suffering from PTSD. It is very difficult to account for every military related suicide since the department of defense no longer keeps track of the military personnel who are retired or who are no longer in service. Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), located in Santa Cruz, California, is a â€Å"non-profit ph armaceutical company working with the FDA and international regulatory agencies to develop psychedelics and marijuana into prescription medicines for patients with unmet medical needs. Since its founding in 1986, MAPS has disbursed over $17 million to research and education surrounding the potential therapeutic uses of psychedelics and marijuana. MAPS is now funding or coordinating clinical trials of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD in eight countries around the world.† Methylenedioxymethamphetmine (MDMA) is an artificial created drug which is highly known for its capability to lower the edge on people. It increases the empathy of subjects and stimulates trust among people. MDMA creates an opportunity for a secure bond to take place and open up about certain traumatic events, something that lacks current anti-depressant medication. Whereas some medication prescribed to PSTD patients tend to hide their emotional state, MDMA creates a comfortable environment between the tr aumatic event that may be causing stress or anxiety, and suppress the escape feeling
